Koh Tao could well be labeled THE Diving Island, having over 30 top-quality diving sites and numerous hotels accepting divers only. Taking your diving certificate on Koh Tao, valid everywhere in the world, is indeed a good and relatively inexpensive idea.
Picturesque Turtle Island
Koh Tao actually means ‘Turtle Island’. Before the 1930s, the island was uninhabited, after which it served as a political prison for some 15 years. Koh Tao is frankly speaking not a big island, so staying there for a few days, or perhaps a week, is probably more than enough for the average holidaymaker. Because even if diving is the most prominent feature of the island, it offers some rather spectacular beaches, nature as well as harmony for your soul.
In fairly stark contrast to the nearby infamous party island of Koh Phangan, Koh Tao is far more balanced a holiday resort island. For instance, explore the exquisite forest and mountain landscape (be aware of the steep and challenging roads), sunbathe at picturesque beaches — postcard quality guaranteed! — and enjoy freshly prepared marine delicacies.
Hihgly Recommendable
Koh Tao is absolutely outstanding when it comes to diving, a fact which is widely known and established. Nonetheless, we would also like to give our best recommendation as a comparatively unexploited paradise-like getaway.
